 Deep Fork National Wildlife Refuge hosted its fourth annual Okmulgee County Archery Days on March 25 and 26.  This year the Refuge invited students from the sixth through twelfth grades to participate on March 25.  Forty-seven students from Beggs, Morris, and a local homeschool group attended and participated in the activities.  The activities for the day included a competition shoot, an opportunity to learn about bowfishing, and an opportunity to shoot at 3-D animals targets.  John Magera, 2004 Olympic Archer and assistant manager at Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, provided a demonstration about archery and wowed the crowd with his ability to shoot balloons off a target at 70 meters with a steady wind.  Lunch was provided by the Friends of Deep Fork NWR for the students.  An overall individual trophy was awarded to the student who scored the highest on the competition shoot.  On March 26, 2009, approximately 115 fourth and fifth graders from Beggs, Morris, and Wilson Elementary Schools and a local homeschool group visited the Refuge and participated in the same activities.  A team trophy and individual medals were given for the students placing first, second and third in both the boys and girls category of the competition shoot.  Lunch was provided by and served by the Friends of Deep Fork NWR with most of the food donated by Taco Mayo.  The kids enjoy coming to the Refuge for this event.  for them, it was more than just a day off from school.  Several of the teachers, parents and school administrators thanked the Refuge staff for hosting this type of event for their students.  The Refuge staff could not put on this event without volunteers.  Approximately 90 volunteers assisted the Refuge with the event over the two days of the event.
