Big Spring Branch Habitat Improvement Project
Midwest Region, October 5, 2008
Print Friendly Version
BACKGROUND:

Big Spring Branch is a 5.5 mile exceptional resource water that contains naturally reproducing brook and brown trout and is located in the Blue River watershed of the lower Wisconsin River. Historically, this watershed has been under heavy agricultural pressure. In more recent years however, land management practices have improved in the watershed which has led to an increase in groundwater recharge, improved water quality and lower stream temperatures. Although the stream has shown signs of improvement, past agricultural practices have caused continued erosion of stream banks.

PROJECT:

The Harry and Larry Nohr Chapter of Trout Unlimited, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Service and partners are working on a multiple year endeavor to stabilize eroding banks; install natural structures in-stream to scour out pools, increase stream velocity and sinuosity; and provide a diversity of habitat for fish, amphibians, and reptiles. The TU chapter received $30,000 through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Fish Habitat Action Plan to partially fund 1.0 mile of stream restoration on Big Spring Branch.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:

Restoration of Big Spring Branch is a stellar example of similar efforts taking place around the Driftless Area. It exemplifies local community pride, improving habitat for fish and other aquatic-dependent communities and continues to elevate public awareness about the importance of Driftless Area resources.
