Friends of the Upper Mississippi Fishery Services (FUMFS), La Crosse NFWCO, La Crosse FHC, Genoa NFH, and the City of La Crosse Park and Recreation Department will be hosting a Youth Outdoor Fest (9:00 AM to 8:00 PM) on July 18, 2009 at Pettibone Lagoon in La Crosse, WI.  Local federal, state and local agencies along with area businesses and non-profit organizations will provide information, demonstrations, entertainment, and hands-on activities relating to fishing and boating to children of all abilities and their families.  Although the focus will be on boating and fishing, information on recreational activities such as hiking, camping, and hunting will be available.  Vendors or sponsors will be on hand to provide food, beverages, equipment for trial, hand-outs, and demonstrations.  Speakers will provide tips on casting, fly fishing, fishing for certain fish species, fish cleaning, how to ice fish, bowfish, canoe/kayak, go sail boating, identify fish, etc.  Conservation, boating and fishing ethics, recreational safety, are a few other topics that will be presented.

The Youth Outdoor Fest will also kick off the FUMFS Boating and Mentorship Program for Kids.  Mentors will be at stations for children and their families to interview, hook-up and become fishing or boating buddies, similar to Big Brothers/Sisters Program.  Throughout the year the child may contact their mentor to get out on the water.  Loaner gear will be provided by La Crosse Park and Recreation.

This event will have free admission to participants, their families, friends, and all area residents with an interest in fishing and boating and many other outdoor activities.  Fees are required for vendors, businesses, non-profit and organizations.
