Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge Trust for Public Lands Celebrates Refuge Addition
Northeast Region, December 4, 2008
Print Friendly Version

On December 4, 2008 the Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge celebrated the addition of 20 acres to the Salt Meadow Unit.  The 20 acres contains valuable salt marsh habitat as well as Connecticut coastal forest which encompass oaks, sassafras and birch.  This land provides critical habitat for migratory birds and for wildlife dependent recreation.  Those attending the event included many partners who assisted in the acquisition of the land: Audubon, Westbrook Land Trust, Trust for Public Land, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Division of Realty and Potapaug Chapter of Audubon.  Most importantly the previous land owners were recognized for their efforts in conserving this valuable habitat and to conserve the nation's wildlife resources for the benefit of the American people.
