Recreation Priority Public Uses - Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge2008 Waterfowl Hunts
Northeast Region, November 13, 2008
Print Friendly Version

The 2008 waterfowl season was a complete opposite from the 2007 season. Instead of drought conditions, the 2008 summer was very wet and water levels were higher than normal. This allowed Cayuga Pool to be opened up again and an additional seven stands were added to the Mohawk south dike. The total number of stands used this year was 34 (33 regular and 1 handicapped). The new stands on Mohawk were not very productive due to heavy cattail areas still surrounding the hunting blinds. The stands will be monitored each year to determine whether or not they will provide a quality hunting site. With higher water levels being maintained in Mohawk Pool, it is expected that muskrats will help thin out the cattails and open up the pool for more waterfowl use.

Even with more hunting areas a good water levels, waterfowl harvest per hunter decreased from 2.02 in 2007 to 1.60 in 2008. This can be attributed to the waterfowl taking advantage of larger spaces and being able to spread out. Onieda Pool was the most productive pool with some of the stands located there harvesting over 40 ducks in the season. Total number of birds harvested was 666 and total number of hunters was 416. The total harvest this year was the highest since 2005. An anticipated return to normal precipitation for the next year along with increased muskrat activity in Mohawk Pool should result in improved results for next year's hunt.
