Recreation – People and Nature – Conservation Field Days for Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, June 4, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge participated in Conservation Field Days (CFD's) in Orleans County (May 20 & 21) and Niagara County (June 3&4).  Conservation Field Days hosts 5th graders for a day of learning about conservation of our natural resources.  Groups of students move between learning stations every 15 minutes to learn about a variety of topics geared toward raising their awareness about natural resource issues.  Some of the learning stations include: bee keeping, hunting and trapping, fisheries, renewable energy, water quality, conservation laws, recycling/composting and wildlife.  Iroquois NWR presented a station on bald eagles, focusing on their life cycle and recovery from near extinction.   At Orleans County CFD's 336 students visited the refuge's station over the two days.  At Niagara County, 417 students were contacted.

Orleans County CFD's, coordinated by the Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension Office, celebrated its 40th anniversary this year.  Iroquois NWR has been a participant in the event from the beginning.  Niagara County CFD's is coordinated by the Niagara County Soil and Water Conservation District.  Other than providing their own transportation, there is no charge for schools to participate.
