Recreation – People and Nature -- 35th Young Waterfowlers Programat Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, October 26, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge held its 35th Annual Youth Waterfowl Hunt on October 26, 2008.  A total of 20 youth participated in the hunt, (18 boys and 2 girls) harvesting 22 birds.  Prior to the hunt, the junior hunters attended a one day orientation on October 18 which included sessions covering waterfowl identification, hunter safety, equipment, duck calling and the use of retrievers. A hot dog/hamburger lunch was provided by the Lake Plains Waterfowl Association and the Finger Lakes and Western New York Waterfowl Association.  The day concluded with a trap shoot and a distribution of backpacks filled with freebies commemorating Iroquois NWR's 50th Anniversary and included water bottles, flyers, magnets, tattoos, bookmarks, pencils, rulers bracelets and t-shirts.  This free program was presented in partnership with the Lake Plains Waterfowl Association who provided instructors for the orientation and guides for the hunt for those who needed one.
