Jordan River NFH staff and Friends promoted the "Let's Go Outside" initiative along with many other Service programs

Everyone loves the fair, young and old alike.  Paul Haver, fish biologist at the Jordan River National Fish Hatchery (NFH), has been involved in the Emmet/Charlevoix County Fair for years, so when he offered us an opportunity to be involved, we jumped at the chance.  This year’s fair was held August 17-23, 2008 at the fairgrounds in Petoskey, Mich. 

According to fair board rules, booths have to be staffed from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily Sunday through Saturday of fair week.  Those taking part in working at our booth were hatchery staff members Roger Gordon, Tim Smigielski, John Johnston, Denise Johnston, and Bob Petersen; hatchery volunteers Dan Sutherland, Nancy and Chuck Proper; and Friends of the Jordan River NFH Vice President Jon Sumner.

The Emmet/Charlevoix County Fair Board estimated 25,000 people passed through the fair gates and enjoyed everything the fair had to offer.  Hatchery personnel were able to meet and greet people of all ages and answer their many questions concerning fish, wildlife, and the environment.  The on-site aquarium was also a big hit, especially with the kids.
