The CCESFO partnered with Audubon, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxillary, the City of Corpus Christi (City), and Padre Isles Yacht Club, to clean debris off Upper Laguna Madre colonial waterbird nesting islands.  This second annual island clean up was a big success with over 60 individuals participating from the partners listed above as well as the U.S. Geological Survey, Environmental Protection Agency, two churches, one scout troop, one public middle school (12 students and two teachers), Texas A & M University, and one high school ROTC unit.  The City's Storm Water Department furnished staff, a front-end loader, and a dump truck to receive all trash retrieved off the islands.  The Yacht Club provided the facilities for loading/unloading boat passengers, offloading trash, and for preparing and serving lunch to the work force.  The debris removed off over 25 islands filled the back of a large (12 yard) dump truck.  In addition to eliminating trash such as fishing line that can entangle and kill birds when they return to nest or to forage on shores of the islands, this cleanup event also offered the opportunity to educate citizens about careful, thoughtful trash disposal, including fishing supplies, and the connection of storm water runoff to the eventual fate of trash in the bays.
