Connecting People with Nature - Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office Participates in Buffalo Zoo Teen Naturalist Program
Northeast Region, August 8, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Biologists Chris Castiglione and Mike Goehle of the Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office (LGLFRO) assisted Wildlife Inspector, Dawn Drummer (Amherst LE) with the Buffalo Zoo Teen Naturalist Program held during the months of July and August.  This three week program included career discussions in the fields of conservation and wildlife.  Mike and Chris were invited to participate in two sessions to discuss careers in fish biology and information technology within the Service.  Their presentations included information about the Service, what their jobs were like, and some of the important issues and challenges they face.  Mike shared some of his experiences dealing with aquatic invasive species and discussed why they are such a problem.  He also highlighted recent examples of species causing considerable damage such as zebra mussel, Asian carp, and round goby.  Chris discussed how technology is used in today's environmental careers and its role in assisting biologists, scientists, and managers with resource management decisions.  Some examples of technology being used by the Service include Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS).  The students completed a field activity using a GPS unit, demonstrating the importance and relevance of technology to scientific work.  A total of 40 high school students participated in the two sessions.
