TETLIN: Alaskan NWRS Biologists Contribute to New Birding Guide
Alaska Region, October 1, 2008
Print Friendly Version

The American Birding Association has published the second edition of A Birder’s Guide to Alaska and numerous Alaskan refuge biologists, past and present, are significant contributors.  Eight of Alaska’s national wildlife refuge employees have authored or co-authored eight of the book’s 54 chapters.  From Tetlin Refuge, Supervisory Wildlife Biologist Bud Johnson and former biologist Keith Larson top the list with contributions to three different chapters describing birding opportunities in the eastern Interior of the state.  In addition, former Tetlin Refuge biologist Terry Doyle (currently manager of the Ten Thousand Island NWR in Florida) contributed a sub-chapter in Larson and Johnson’s chapter about the Glenn Highway.  From Kenai Refuge, Todd Eskelin drew on more than a decade of birding experience on the Kenai Peninsula to co-author a chapter about birding along the Sterling Highway.  Refuge biologists from southwest Alaska also made important contributions.  Susan Savage of Alaska Peninsula/Becharof Refuge, Kristine Sowl of Izembek Refuge, and former Togiak Refuge biologist Rob MacDonald (now pilot/biologist with Migratory Bird Management in Juneau) each authored separate chapters describing birding opportunities on their refuges. Finally, former biologist (and current Education Specialist) Brian McCaffery co-authored a chapter about the growing birding potential on Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge. These diverse contributions from across the state highlight how Alaskan refuge biologists are helping to promote the Service’s Birding Initiative.  By publishing what they know about distribution and abundance of birds on their national wildlife refuges, each of these authors has helped to make their refuge a more birder-friendly destination.
