Fall…. the kids are back in school, fall colors are at their peak, and the summer visitor and field seasons are coming to a close. There's a hint of new snow on the mountains. It's a time to relax and reflect on the accomplishments of the past season. Not quite, at least not for Kenai National Wildlife Refuge's Environmental Education staff.  Each day in September, and the first two weeks of October, was packed with up to three field trips a day. Education Specialist Michelle Ostrowski and SCA Intern Eve Smallwood were mere blurs to their coworkers as they tried to accommodate all the interested student and youth groups. Some groups had to be scheduled into spring of 2009 because of the jam-packed schedule. Some groups met at the Environmental Education Center at the Refuge headquarters, but many were lead on hikes across the refuge. In all, 32 school groups visited the refuge during the fall season.  In 28 days, the refuge education staff conducted 45 field trips for more than 950 students.   The last field trip of the fall was concluded on October ninth in midst of a steady snow.
