Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge Participates in Regional Survey of Native Bees
Northeast Region, August 22, 2008
Print Friendly Version
The recent declines in managed honeybee populations have led to concerns about the status of native bees.  In order to establish a baseline of data on our native bee populations, selected refuges in Region 5 were asked to participate in a survey.  In late August at Rachel Carson NWR, Americorps volunteer Elizabeth Wolff set up four transects of bee bowls in one of the refuge divisions.  Specimens collected were sent to U. S. Geological Survey for identification.  The sites used for collection are currently managed for the New England Cottontail (an endangered species in Maine).  It is our hope that restoration of shrublands for the rabbits will also be beneficial for bees.  Results from the bee survey are expected in the late fall, and these may help inform our management of this portion of the refuge.
