Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge Helps Teach Youths How to Fly Fish
Northeast Region, August 9, 2008
Print Friendly Version

On Saturday, August 9, 2007 Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge and Kittery Trading Post located in Kittery, Maine hosted a free "learn to fly fish" class for kids between the ages of 8 and 15.  The class took place at Kittery Trading Post (KTP), beginning inside the store where refuge intern Ben Dudek gave a brief introduction on the National Wildlife Refuge System, Rachel Carson, the Rachel Carson NWR, and salt marsh/fish ecology.  After Ben's presentation, staff from the Kittery Trading Post gave a brief presentation outlining the basics of fly fishing equipment, theory and fundamentals.  Participants then moved outside to the front lawn of KTP where there was a casting session which gave participants a chance to learn and practice the rudiments of proper fly casting.  Donna led the fly casting instruction portion of the event which lasted approximately an hour and fifteen minutes.

All 6 participants also went home with a U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service goodie bag  containing information on the NWR system, Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, safe lead-free fishing practices as well as a pamphlet detailing the nine fishing access sites on the refuge.   Each participate received a fly courtesy of Rachel Carson NWR.  Event coordinators were John Peterson from Kittery Trading Post and Karrie Schwaab from Rachel Carson NWR.  A Refuge Challenge Cost Share grant provided funding for this event.
