San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge Salvages Fish from the Historic Slaughter Ranch
Southwest Region, September 15, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Over the month of September Refuge Staff salvaged fish, Yaqui chub and Yaqui topminnow, from the historic Slaughter Ranch.  The ranch has a large pond that will overflow during the monsoon rains which can lead to fish being displaced from the pond.  Over several days Refuge Staff trapped, netted and electro-fished this overflow area to recover these displaced fish.  The majority of these fish were placed back into the ranch pond, while some of the Yaqui topminnow were stocked into a new pond on the refuge.  The Refuge is in part of the Rio Yaqui Drainage and was once home to 25% (8 species) of Arizona’s native fish, but with loss of habitat now provides habitat to five species of native fish.  While not a yearly occurrence, Refuge Staff regularly have to salvage fish from areas such as overflows or from ponds that are on the verge of going dry due to drought.
