Volunteers from West Virginia University and other individuals planted 2,500 native red spruce trees on the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge on September 20 and 21.  The project was sponsored by the National Environmental Education Foundation in support of National Public Lands Day who provided a check for $1,000.00 to help purchase trees.  Another 1,500 trees were donated by the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy.  Volunteers were treated to a ride on Timberline Four Season Resort's chair lift which provided easier access to the planting site on the refuge, located adjacent to Timberline's boundary.  The site is an important habitat link between two currently fragmented populations of threatened Cheat Mountain salamanders.  Through the restoration of the red spruce community refuge staff hope to improve overall habitat conditions which will allow the eventual habitat connection between the two populations.
