KENAI: Contamination Risks Reduced in Kenai Refuge Oil and Gas Field
Alaska Region, September 30, 2008

A new tanker trailer containment structure within the Swanson River Oil Field should significantly reduce the risk of minor contaminant spills on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge
A new tanker trailer containment structure within the Swanson River Oil Field should significantly reduce the risk of minor contaminant spills on Kenai National Wildlife Refuge

The Swanson River Oil and Gas Field within Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was first developed in 1957.  Since that time there has been a constant evolution in technologies and understanding of environmental pollutants that have changed management practices.  Chevron/Texaco, the current Field Operator, has been pursuing upgrades in piping, metering, and operational practices to reduce risk of contaminant spills.  Recently they constructed a new shed to consolidate a variety of tanker trailers that contain chemicals or petroleum fuels.  Previously these tanks had been stored on pads with limited containment capability.  Now they are placed together on a concrete floor that has a containment lip, sloping to the center, and a sump for fluid management.  The roof over the facility will also help reduce accumulation of liquids.  Over time management changes such as this should significantly reduce the risk of contamination of Refuge areas that have historic oil and gas leases.
