Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary site, Green Bay, Wisconsin, has become choked with invasive cattails and phragmites.
Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary site, Green Bay, Wisconsin, has become choked with invasive cattails and phragmites.

This project involved the enhancement of a 5-acre wetland area located on the Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary property in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  The wetland area has become increasingly drier over the past decade.  The site was previously a mix of open water and native wetland vegetation, but has become choked with invasive cattails and phragmites.  Adjacent to this wetland area is a series of open water wetland basins that were created for waterfowl habitat in the 1930s.  Water levels in these wetlands are controlled by input from a well system.  A pipe with a water level control structure will be installed to allow water from the well-fed system to flow into the project wetland site.  Having the ability to control water levels in the project wetland will allow the sight to be managed for the control of undesirable vegetation.   Located adjacent to the bay of Green Bay, the site will provide excellent habitat for waterfowl and shorebirds.
