A box culvert is installed at the downstream end of southern impoundment as part of Swan Creek dam removal.

This project involved the removal of two dams located on Swan Creek in Forest County, Wisconsin.  The site is currently owned by the Forest County Potawatomi Tribal Community.  These dams were installed decades ago by a previous owner to allow access to agricultural fields on the west side of the property.  Downstream of the dams, Swan Creek is a productive native brook trout stream.  Construction of the dams prevents access to upstream habitat by brook trout and other aquatic species found downstream.  The impoundments created upstream of the dams also negatively affect downstream habitat by causing an undesirable increase in water temperature.  Before the dams were removed, the impoundments were drawn down using bypass pumping, and accumulated sediments were excavated from the basin area.  The north dam was completely removed and the stream channel at this segment was restored.  To allow access to property located west of the stream, a large cement box culvert was installed in the stream channel at the south dam location.  Sediment traps were installed at three downstream locations and will to be maintained until the stream stabilizes.
