Prairie Wetlands Learning Center Celebrates National Public Lands Day
Midwest Region, September 27, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Volunteers of all ages came out to the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center on Saturday, September 27 to help collect prairie grass seed and remove invasive trees and shrubs as the Center celebrated National Public Lands Day.

Younger volunteers learned how to identify grasses and forbs, and then set out on the PWLC grounds to strip seed into bags, while adults worked to remove cottonwoods and buckthorn from several restored prairie tracts. The beautiful weather made the morning fly by, as the bags of seed piled up in the PWLC greenhouse. The seed will now be cleaned and sorted, and then stored in anticipation of planting in the greenhouse next spring, and eventually into the prairies at the Center.
