Journal Entry   Back Boy Scouts Work with FWS to Reduce Lesser Prairie-Chicken Fence Collision Mortality Author: Nancy Riley Southwest Region, July 7, 2008 Print Friendly Version On June 28, 2008, eight boy scouts from Troop 65 from Roswell, NM, the Scoutmaster, and two parents met with staff from the Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program to attach fence markers to barbed wire fences as part of this Partners Program initiative in Milnesand, NM.  Installation of small vinyl siding fence markers increases the visibility of the fences to lesser prairie-chickens and other grassland birds, and will help reduce collision mortality as part of on-going efforts to help prevent the need to list the LPC as a federally threatened species.  Approximately three miles of fences were marked on private lands with a signed Private Lands Agreement.  The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish LPC biologist gave a talk to the scouts about LPC biology and habitat at the Milnesand Community Center and the Grasslans Charitable Foundation graciously permitted the boys to camp out behind their research facility.  Several scouts observed LPCs at a windmill tank on property owned by The Nature Conservancy that morning making the whole experience very enjoyable for the troop.
