SACRAMENTO RIVER NWR: Refuge Grazing Program Lauded in September's California Cattlemen Magazine.
California-Nevada Offices , September 15, 2008
Print Friendly Version

The Sacramento River National Wildlife Refuge grazing program was given the thumbs up in the September  issue of California Cattlemen Magazine. The article,"Preventing Catastrophes: Utilizing Grazing to Reduce Fuel Loads," by Tracy Schohr,  focuses on the Sul Norte Unit of the refuge and the successful partnership they have with an adjacent cattle operation, Llano Seco Rancho to reduce fuel loads.

Llano Seco Rancho has been working since 2005 with the refuge on their fuel reduction program for this Unit.  In areas less where cattle are not well suited the refuge uses goats. The advantage to using cattle on the refuge is an economical and has been sucessful for other management needs such as weed control in vernal pool sites and other restored habitats.

Assistant Refuge Manager Kelly Moroney and wildlife biologist Joe Silveira are quoted extensively in the story and were very successful in incorporating Service messages into an article that will reach over 3,000 California cattlemen.
