College students from all over the country attend Au Sable Institute summer courses to diversify their science experiences.  Au Sable located near Grayling, Mich., offers field-based science courses where students participate in field trips to experience the very resources they intend to learn about.  The Institute's Aquatic Biology class annually attends a program at Jordan River National Fish Hatchery (NFH).  This year fifteen students attended the field trip and fishery biologist Tim Smigielski led a tour of the hatchery facility.  Tim also explained the history of logging effects in northern Michigan watersheds.  He presented the history of lake trout fisheries in the Great lakes and focused on rehabilitation efforts and changes in the upper great lakes ecosystem.  The students asked many questions regarding sea lamprey, aquatic invasive species and Great lakes fisheries management and natural resource policy.  This is always a very exciting day at the hatchery.  Jordan River NFH staff is always pleased to educate future natural resource conservationists and potential Service employees.
