The New Jersey Field Office Helps Develop a Chemical Monitoring Plan
Northeast Region, July 14, 2008
Print Friendly Version
New Jersey Field Office Contaminants Biologist Clay Stern and STEP intern Maegin Wessler are helping the proposed Branchville Area Wastewater Treatment Facilities develop a chemical monitoring plan to protect a downstream dwarf wedgemussel population. The dwarf wadgemussel is listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The plan, which will remain in effect during the life of the facility, will involve monitoring chemicals such as plasticizers, estrogens and other endocrine disrupters, a variety of non-prescription drugs, brominated fire retardants, ammonia, and heavy metals. The facility is also discussing with the NJFO how best to monitor fish populations essential in the dwarf wedgemussel life cycle so as to detect adverse effects from exposure to substances not removed in the wastewater treatment process, particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals.
