The
The "wrapped" barn prior to the evening's trapping, July 28, 2008 (FWS photo).

The bat population in the barn at Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge was recently assessed by refuge staff with help from the Friends of Supawna Meadows NWR, Trident Environmental Consultants, Cogentrix Energy, Inc., Jennings Equipment, staff from John Heinz NWR and the NJ Field Office, and refuge volunteers. Approximately 1,300 bats were counted.

Large openings in the old barn were covered with large sheets of plastic with help from equipment supplied by Cogentrix and transported by Jennings Equipment, and assistance from volunteers from the Friends Group, and Trident. Using a harp trap, 216 little brown bats and 12 big brown bats were captured.
