On August 21, 2008, Service biologist Steve Arey from the Arlington, Texas Field Office attended the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture - Blackland Prairie/Post Oak Savannah Technical Team meeting held at Texas A&M University. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss and identify priority bird species, habitats, and locations as well as research and conservation priorities for this newly formed joint venture in an "all bird" context within the Blackland Prairies and Post Oak Savannah ecoregions of Texas. Tentatively, the Technical Team will recommend to the Joint Venture Management Board that the priorities of this joint venture be based on those habitat types, at a landscape level, that are most limited, threatened, or have the greatest restoration potential. Of utmost concern are native grasslands, native oak savannahs, natural wetlands, and bottomland hardwoods, riparian areas, and in-stream sandbars. Bird species of conservation concern will be paired with these habitat types and management recommendations to the Joint Venture Management Board will be forthcoming.
