IZEMBEK: Visitors Trek 4,000 Miles to Visit a Refuge... and other things

Exactly one year and one day after beginning their 4,000 mile adventure, Erin McKittrick and Bretwood "Hig" Higman walked into the visitor center at Izembek NWR in Cold Bay, Alaska.  What made their arrival noteworthy is the fact that their excursion, which began June 9, 2007 in Seattle, had been accomplished by foot, pack rafts, and skis along the Pacific Coast by human power only.

The mission of the trip is to explore the environmental issues of the region: salmon, forests, resource extraction, and global warming.  As they have done in communities along the way, they presented a program about their adventure via a slide show and demonstration of their survival gear, hosted by Izembek Refuge and the citizens of Cold Bay and held at the Cold Bay Community Center.

After replenishing supplies, the couple headed out; their next goal being Unimak Island before their final destination, False Pass. Here they boarded the M/V Tustumena for their new home, Seldovia.
