Happy couple Hatches Five! Trumpeter Swans Successfully Nest in Cottonwood County, Minn.
Midwest Region, June 30, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Wolf Lake Waterfowl Production Area, Windom Wetland Management District, Minnesota:  For only the second time in more than a century trumpeter swans have successfully nested in Cottonwood County.

The first record occurred at the Wolf Lake WPA in 2006 when the pair hatched six cygnets, only one of which reached flight stage.  No nesting activity was noted in 2007 although the birds were in the area.

The pair returned again this year and hatched five cygnets on the WPA.  Trumpeter swans have been released on Wolf Lake for the past seven years in an attempt to re-establish a population in southwestern Minnesota - an attempt that appears to be successful!
