Journal Entry   Back Letterboxing activity at Foothills Montessori School in Las Vegas, NV Southwest Region, March 10, 2008 Print Friendly Version Marit Alanen, a wildlife biologist in the Tucson suboffice of the Arizona Ecological Services office, developed a Letterboxing activity for four lower-elementary (grades 1-3) classrooms and one middle school classroom at Foothills Montessori in Las Vegas, NV on March 10, 2008.  Letterboxing is an activity similar to geocaching, except that a GPS unit is not needed.  Instead, clues must be solved to determine the location of a Letterbox.  When a Letterbox is found, a personal stamp is placed in the Letterbox's log book, and the Letterbox's stamp is placed in one's personal log book.  The activity involved the students creating their own personal stamps and log books, then solving riddles to locate five Letterboxes hidden around their school.  Information was also sent home with each student to explain Letterboxing to their parents and encourage families to look for Letterboxes hidden in the Las Vegas area.  Approximately 125 children participated in the Letterboxing activity.
