Service Assists in Angelina Beautiful/Clean ECO Camp
Southwest Region, June 9, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Jason F. Roesner of the Arlington Ecological Service’s East Texas Sub-office assisted the Angelina Beautiful/Clean with its ECO Camp on June 9, 2008.  Approximately 59 participants ranging from 5 years old to fourth grade were given a hands-on introduction to subjects including water conservation, litter prevention, recycling, forestry, wildlife and their habitats along with beautification through outside games, music, art, storytelling and science.  Participating agencies/organizations included the Service, U. S. Forest Service (USFS), Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), staff from Angelina County Waste Management Center, private educators and many dedicated volunteers.   Jason, along with Sean Willis (TPWD) and Josh Pierce (USFS), staffed a science station that discussed subjects such as red-cockaded woodpecker management in East Texas, identification of skulls and pelts, and the benefits of prescribed burning to wildlife.  The students had the opportunity to handle the skulls and pelts along with a live snake.  In total, the students left the event with a better understanding of wildlife and forest management efforts and resulting benefits.
