“Connecting People with Nature” – The Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office Presents Aquatic Insect Program to Cato-Meridian Middle School Students.
Northeast Region, May 28, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Biological Science Technician Noelle Rayman, from the Lower Great Lakes Fishery Resources Office, presented an outreach program titled "Aquatic Bugs Don't Bug Me" to Cato-Meridian Middle School students in Cato, N.Y. on Wednesday, May 28, 2008.  Two 5th grade classes and the Ecology Club (totaling approximately 50 students) participated in searching for aquatic insects in stream sediment and examined their findings under dissecting microscopes.  The students not only identified aquatic insects, but they learned about how aquatic insects are an important component of aquatic systems, such as stream health indicators and food for fish.  The students learned about the different life cycles of macroinvertebrates, as well as the different habitat some insects occupy in streams.  Students also learned vocabulary such as macroinvertebrate, benthic, trophic level, shredders, grazers, neuston, and littoral.
