Since 1999, The Conservation Fund (TCF) has used funding from several grants (including The Richard King Mellon Foundation, The Richard and Rhonda Goldman Fund, and the North American Wetlands Conservation Act Funds) to purchase lands from local native corporations near Izembek Refuge to provide habitat for black brant, emperor geese, tundra swans, rock sandpipers, caribou, brown bears and salmon spawning streams.

The latest purchase of 12,586 acres from the St. George Corporation brings TCF’s total acreage purchased for Izembek Refuge to 71,511 acres with a value of $8.75 million.  Parcels include lands in the Pavlof Bay, Canoe Bay and Morzhovoi Bay areas added to Izembek Refuge and the Pavlof Unit of the Alaska Peninsula Refuge. The Fish and Wildlife Service is extremely grateful for these valuable additions to the Refuge System.

The Conservation Fund received the 2008 Fish and Wildlife Service Alaska Regional Director’s Award for Excellence as an Outstanding Partner.
