A total of 55 pronghorn were present within the breeding enclosure (pen) by the end of May.  Of these, 25 are fawns born earlier this year which represents a 78 % increase in the fawn crop from 2007.  Preliminary estimates from the AGFD techs that monitor the pen indicate 15 males and 10 females.  These numbers may change as the facial markings on the youngest fawns become more distinct.  The fawns are nearly equally split between the north half (13) and the southwest quarter (12). 

During telemetry flights conducted May 11 and 18, 2008 by the AGFD, three of the five pronghorn bucks released from the pen this year were found drowned in the near vicinity of the Paloma Ranch and associated irrigation canal approximately 12 miles southwest of Gila Bend, Arizona. 

A fourth buck of the five released this year has not been observed via radio telemetry or otherwise since March 30 during expanded search attempts and is believed to either be deceased or has a dysfunctional radio collar.  The only known surviving buck from the 2008 release persists on South Tac in the vicinity of several groups of wild pronghorn.

Planning was initiated during May for two boma complexes (corral traps) within the north half and southwest quarter of the pen.  Sites were selected and materials were purchased with a planned start date of June 9.  The bomas will enable the simultaneous capture of multiple pronghorn which is essential as the pen herd increases in number and the associated need to release or relocate larger numbers of pronghorn each year to prevent overcrowding related issues within the pen.
