Outdoor Adventure Club Tours Jordan River NFH
Midwest Region, October 26, 2007
Print Friendly Version

The Kingsley High School Outdoor Adventure Club returned to Jordan River National Fish Hatchery (NFH) this fall during their hike of the Jordan River valley.  Fifty students from the junior and senior class toured the hatchery in late October.  Fisheries Biologist Tim Smigielski discussed the connection between the hatchery, Lake trout restoration and Sea lamprey control. The group was very interested in career opportunities with the Service. The tour began at the Five Tile Spring water source where Smigielski explained the importance of  water quality to trout culture and the connection to the hydrogeology of the area.  The students learned about cold water fish culture, hatchery operations and fish distribution and transportation.  The tour ended with a discussion about resource conservation and protection near the location of the hatchery water effluent treatment basins.  This was a great opportunity to inspire future natural resource conservationists and possibly future Service employees.
