Great Swamp National Wildlife RefugeCompletes its Sixth Year of Participation in the New Jersey Youth Corp Training Program
Northeast Region, May 22, 2008
Print Friendly Version
The New Jersey Youth Corps is a full-time instructional and community service program for high school dropouts, with completion of a high school curriculum and employment as the ultimate goals for each student. Students spend a half-day in academic instruction and a half day in community service work. A one-month orientation that includes academic and interest/aptitude assessment is followed by placement in community service work crew projects and continuation in basic skills classes.  Advanced students are placed in specialized job training programs.  One of these programs, "Brownfields" training, prepares each student with the skills necessary to be qualified for an entry level position as an environmental technician.  Each year, Great Swamp staff participate in this program which reaches out to some of our most economically disadvantaged New Jersey cities and towns.  This year's program aided a diverse group of over 40 students from Newark, Trenton, and Phillipsburg, NJ in gaining skills and experience necessary for employment in this highly technical and competitive field.
