Connecting People with Nature: Youth Turkey Hunt Program at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, May 4, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge held its Annual Youth Turkey Hunt to help connect junior hunters with nature.  The program consisted of an orientation on May 3 from 2-4 pm at which junior hunters learned about hunter safety, calling, turkey habitat, and refuge hunting regulations. The program is open to all New York State licensed junior hunters from 12 – 17 years of age but space is limited to 25.  After completing the orientation, junior hunters are issued a refuge permit to hunt on May 4, the only turkey hunt day when junior hunters have the refuge to themselves.

Nine junior hunters were registered for the program, however only four (two boys and two girls) attended the orientation and received permits to hunt on May 4.  Attendees also received free hats and turkey calls.  The calls were donated by Night and Hale through a local sportsman. New York State Department of Conservation Officer provided the youngsters information on State regulations governing turkey hunting.
