Green Bay Biologist briefs Council of Lake Committees, Great Lakes Fishery Commission on Mass-Marking Implementation plan for the Great lakes.
Midwest Region, April 22, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Chuck Bronte, Green Bay Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (NFWCO) Fishery Biologist and U.S. co-chair of the Mass-marking Implementation Task Group, presented the final report on a plan to mark and tag all 31 million salmon and trout stocked into the Great Lakes to the Council of Lake Committees (CLC), Great Lakes Fishery Commission at their semi-annual meeting in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on April 22, 2008.   The CLC is interested in developing a basin wide program to adipose fin-clip and place coded-wire tags into all salmon and trout stocked by state, federal, tribal and provincial hatcheries.  This will allow all agencies to better evaluate rearing and stocking practices, measure the relative contribution of stocked fish to fisheries and gauge the impact stocking has on the ecosystem. Bronte and a multi-agency team of state, tribal, and provincial biologists worked for three years on developing equipment and budget needs to implement the program at 50 hatchery facilities across the Great Lakes basin.  If realized, the program will be operated by the Service on the U.S. side and by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in Canada.
