Jordan River National Fish Hatchery (NFH) completed its annual lake trout marking project in mid-February.  The project finished up early this year because some fish were fin clipped in December.  The change was due to the anticipated capability to stock a few weeks earlier this year. Each year, the hatchery calls back about twelve permanent intermittent employees (Animal Caretakers) to perform the clipping, while staff coordinate, move fish around and provide oversight.  This year 1,985,469 lake trout of three different strains received an (RV) fin clip. The fins are removed manually by cutting off the fin with clippers.  Fin clips are a relatively easy way to identify year classes of lake trout stocked into the Great Lakes.
