Boardman River Dams Committee Approves Dam Alternative Fact Sheets
Midwest Region, April 22, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Fishery Biologist Rick Westerhof from the Green Bay National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (NFWCO) participated in the monthly Boardman River Dams Committee (BRDC) meeting on April 22, 2008 in Traverse City, Mich.  The BRDC approved the preparation of fact sheets for two of the seven alternative dam options identified at previous meetings.  The two options are:  1) Retain/repair all dams and 2) Remove Sabin Dam, retain/repair Union Street Dam, and modify Boardman and Brown Bridge dams.

The BRDC developed a list of potential modifications for dams, fish passage and recreation.  The dam modification options included a simple fixed weir, spillway modifications, construction of rack ramps, bottom draw for temperature control, and system wide flood control.  The fish passage modification options included fish passage for lake sturgeon at Union Street Dam, maintaining non-native species control at Union Street Dam, and allowing passage of non-native salmonids into the Boardman River system.  Fish passage methods that will be evaluated at all dams are vertical, steep, denil, natural bypass and other methods identified by the consultant team.  Recreational options discussed at the meeting were modify recreational boating access, improve riverine recreation/fishing, improve public access to the river, develop a white water park, and construct a side channel or natural bypass for kayakers and canoeists.

All these modifications will be analyzed and evaluated as the BRDC develops a final recommendation on the fate of the dams to the dams’ owners by December 2008.
