Journal Entry   Back Osage River Lock and Dam 1 Midwest Region, May 9, 2008 Print Friendly Version Columbia National Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (NFWCO) Project Leader Tracy Hill was asked to participate in a meeting with the Columbia Ecological Services Field Office (CMFO) and the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) regarding Lock and Dam 1 on the Osage River.  MDC would like to provide fish passage at the structure because of the benefits to Missouri River fishes.  Dr. Hill was asked to participate in the meeting to provide information on use of the lower Osage River by the federally endangered pallid sturgeon.  MDC would like to ascertain if pallid sturgeon are being prevented from using portions of the lower Osage River because of the lock and dam.  To date the Columbia NFWCO has captured several pallid sturgeon at the confluence of the Osage and Missouri Rivers but have not sampled the river near the lock and dam.  The degraded nature of the lock and dam and fear of failure of the structure is cause of great concern for not only the pallid sturgeon but also several endangered mussel species.  CMFO will continue to work with the MDC to resolve their concerns about this structure.
