The Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge gets picked up by Wal-Mart
Midwest Region, April 9, 2008
Print Friendly Version

Approximately 75 Wal-Mart employees of Market 3 picked up trash on the Baltimore Bottom Unit of The Big Muddy National Fish and Wildlife Refuge.  Market 3 is a region of approximately 8 stores and some employees drove over an hour to volunteer to clean the refuge.

Steve Dowler a Wal-Mart employee familiar with the refuge unit noticed all of the trash washed in from the river.  Steve and other fellow Wal-Mart employees organized most of the event.  They provided a huge dumpster for the trash and a Wal-Mart trailer for recyclables.  They divided the volunteers into teams in which some collected the trash and others sorted out recyclables. Another crew cooked hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch.

Friends of Big Muddy assisted the event by providing t-shirts and gloves from the Missouri Stream team they represent.  Friends of Big Muddy also helped scout the area for trash and select priority pick up areas within the Baltimore Bottom Unit.

Wal-Mart employees removed 8 tons of trash and recycled another ½ ton of materials. Wal-Mart employees were so efficient at sorting and collecting trash they came up with some impressive statistics.  These include 2,123 assorted plastic bottles, 81 tires, 46 without rims and 35 with rims, two full sized refrigerators, and 9 55 gallon barrels.  Some more unusual items picked up include 7 basketballs, a microwave and a vacuum cleaner.
