Control of invasive plants was the Refuge's theme at the 2008 Kenai Peninsula Sports Show
Control of invasive plants was the Refuge's theme at the 2008 Kenai Peninsula Sports Show

Kenai National Wildlife Refuge prepared displays and staffed a booth at the 2008 Kenai Peninsula Sport , Recreation, and Trade Show in Soldotna April 25 - 27.  The annual event brings out local residents interested in hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor recreational activities.  The Refuge booth was designed this year to help inform people about the growing problem with invasive plants in the wild-lands of the Kenai Peninsula.  Many of the vectors for the plants come from backcountry visitors that unknowingly carry exotic plant seeds in hay for pack horses, boots, tents, and other outdoor gear.  Over 450 people visited the booth, interacted with staff, and were given Refuge brochures, Invasive Plant Identification guides, and brochures on responsible landscaping.  A common theme seemed to be that most visitors to the display did not know that Oxeye Daisies and Butter 'n' Eggs were invasive plants, but once they did, they wanted to know how to get rid of them.
