The Friends of Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (Friends) and the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge) received a grant from the National Park Service National Natural Landmark program to assist in the ongoing construction of rainwater catchments (guzzlers) to provide supplemental fresh water during drought conditions for ocelots and other wildlife.  As of April 2008, a total of eight guzzlers have been constructed on the Laguna Atascosa Unit of the Refuge and one guzzler on the Bahia Grande Unit of the Refuge.  Guzzler design has also been shared with interested local landowners and featured in a recent article in the Brownsville, Texas newspaper.  A wide range of species have been documented using the Refuge guzzlers, including ocelots, bobcats, deer, coyotes, javelina, crested caracaras, armadillos, Harris hawks, great horned owls, nilgai, feral hogs, oppossums, great kiskadees, eastern cottontail rabbits, black and turkey vultures, indigo snakes, raccoons, and other species.  Ocelots have been documented at three of these guzzlers in over 100 photographs.
