Journal Entry   Back Verde Valley Birding Festival - Blacklighting Insects with Kids Southwest Region, April 25, 2008 Print Friendly Version Dave Smith, wildlife biologist from the Phoenix Ecological Service Office, participated in the Verde Valley Birding Festival at Dead Horse Ranch State Park, Cottonwood, Arizona.  On the evening of April 25th    he set up two lights in front of hanging bed sheets to attract night-flying insects for kids to observe.  Barbie Hart, Interpretive Specialist with the Arizona State Parks Department, provided exercises for the kids to participate in while watching insects come to the lights.  Ten kids and their parents participated in the activity.
