The Alaska Peninsula/Becharof National Wildlife Refuge staff participated with three other federal entities, University of Alaska-Fairbanks, and Naknek Electric Association to host the second annual “Women in Science” conference.  The event was held at the Bristol Bay Borough School in Naknek, Alaska on February 23.  The purpose of the event is to inform students, parents, and teachers about careers in science and to encourage participation especially by female students.  Each speaker introduced how they became a scientist.  They also discussed hurdles students might face and how to overcome these.  During break-out sessions each speaker involves the student in some activity directly related to their work.  This year Wildlife Biologist Savage borrowed Wildlife Biologist Watts’ remote infrared camera which she used to demonstrate documenting rare species and mark-recapture techniques used in Wildlife Biology.  Other break-outs included a discussion of rock morphology by National Park Service Biological Technician Moore, a lesson on sea otter natural history and study methods by U.S. Geological Survey – Alaska Science Center Biologist Coletti, and a discussion of river water level monitoring techniques by National Weather Service - Alaska/Pacific River Forecasting Center Hydrologist Radlein.  Unfortunately, due to foggy weather, a chartered aircraft was unable to bring Dillingham students to the conference.  .
