The Partners for Fish and Wildlife Program in New Mexico funded habitat enhancement work along Little Willow Creek, a tributary of the Rio Chama, on tribal lands near Chama, New Mexico.  PFW funds will be used to plant native Rio Grande and narrowleaf cottonwood seedlings along both sides of 1.44 miles of Little Willow Creek.  Domestic livestock and wildlife grazing, and drought have contributed to limited natural regeneration of cottonwood overstory and willow understory in some areas.  The Tribe will purchase and plant approximately 450 cottonwood seedlings in suitable sites along this stretch of the creek.  Willow whips will be harvested from other areas along Little Willow Creek or other tribal property, and planted in wet swales within the enhancement area to increase vegetative diversity.  The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has facilitated this project as the managing cooperator.
