Journal Entry   Back Spill Response and Sturgeon Conservation in the Middle Mississippi River Midwest Region, April 8, 2008 Print Friendly Version The federally endangered pallid sturgeon occurs in the Missouri River, the Mississippi River below the Missouri River confluence, and some major tributaries of these rivers.  Recent radio telemetry data suggest that the pallid sturgeon uses the side channels of the Middle Mississippi River.  These side channels also make good oil spill containment and collection or removal areas.  Spill responders from the states, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other local governments have formed a work group to develop response strategies to avoid and minimize the adverse affects on sturgeon of spill response activities.  The response strategies will be published in atlases and made available to first responders.  This information will help reduce the effects of spill response on sturgeon and ultimately contribute to the conservation of the endangered pallid sturgeon.  Spill contingency planning is an important activity of the Service’s Environmental Contaminants Program.
