Explosive Blasting Threatens Nesting Eagles at Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge
Northeast Region, April 3, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Mark McCollugh, Maine Field Office and Refuge Manger Bill Kolodnicki meet with representatives of Maine DOT and J&J GSA contractors to discuss the need for blasting as part of the Calais International Bridge construction.  The discovery of ledge underneath two border crossing buildings has led to the need to use blasting as an alternative to move the rock.  After discussions about the impacts of the process on the refuge eagles and wildlife, a monitoring process was developed.  It appears that procedures in place will protect the nesting eagles and through the proactive approach of the MaineDOT a monitoring program was developed with the refuge to detect any negative reactions from the eagles during the short blasts.  It displayed the good partnership that the Service has had throughout this project with the state of Maine.
