Ecology Institute Official from Mexico visits San Bernardino National Wildlife Refuge Area to Discuss Border Related Issues
Southwest Region, March 1, 2008
Print Friendly Version
Dra, Ana Cordova, Directora General de  Investigación de Ordenamiento Ecológico y Conservación de los Ecosistemas INE/SEMARNAT, Instituto Nacional de Ecologìa (General Manager of Investigation of Ecological Arranging and Conservation of the Ecosystems from the National Institute of  Ecology) in Mexico, visited Douglas, Arizona and San Bernardino NWR, in late February and early March.  The purpose of the visit was for the exchange of ideas and experiences related to cross-border environmental, conservation, and security issues on the International Border between Arizona and Sonora.

In attendance at the meetings were: representatives from Cuenca de los Ojos; Malpai Borderland Group; Sky Islands Alliance; USFWS; USGS; USDA; Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s office; the Center of Baccalaureatte of Technology and Industrialism Studies, Aqua Prieta, Sonora; University of Arizona; and the Northern Jaguar Project.

Of concern to all participants were the diverse (environmental, social, and economic) impacts of border fence construction.  The lack of integrated conservation, development, and security vision for the region was a concern of many participants.  Plans to develop an initiative to foster collaborative, respectful, community-based cross-border conservation, security, and more sustainable practices were set in motion.
