WALLKILL RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFEREFUGEAMPHIBIAN CROSSING SURVEY
Northeast Region, March 7, 2008
Print Friendly Version

In a couple of rainy evenings in late March, The Friends of the Wallkill River Refuges combined efforts with the Wildlife Conservation Corps of the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife's Endangered and Non-Game Species Program and the New Jersey Audubon Society to conduct an amphibian inventory along various roads within and bordering the refuge.  An orientation meeting was held on March 7 and had 14 participants, 9 of whom went out that night to conduct surveys in the rainy weather.  Additional surveys were conducted on March 8,14, and 19 with 2 to 6 people going out each time. Many species of salamanders and frogs were recorded, with documentation made of the number of killed individuals. The Friends group, along with refuge staff and other partners, will now work with the state to try and secure additional resources needed to protect amphibians that are crossing the roads in and around the refuge.
